Staying in Viernheim
Viernheim is a small Hessian town pressed right up against Mannheim's northern edge, and its identity is shaped largely by that proximity. For many visitors it means the Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum, one of the larger shopping centres in the region, and the Viernheimer Kreuz, the motorway interchange that makes the town an easy overnight stop for drivers crossing southwest Germany. It earned some attention in the 1990s as a "Brundtland City," a model project for energy saving and climate protection, and the surrounding Viernheimer Heide offers flat, pleasant walking and cycling in pine heathland.
Be honest: this is not a sightseeing destination in its own right, the centre is modest and quiet in the evenings, and with only a handful of hotels the choice is limited. Its real value is as a cheaper, calmer base for Mannheim, Heidelberg and the Bergstraße wine villages. Stay near the town centre if you want a few restaurants within walking distance, or close to the motorway junctions if you're mainly passing through by car.
