Staying in Vigo
Vigo is Galicia's biggest city and its working port, built around shipbuilding and one of Europe's largest fishing fleets rather than tourism — this is a place that earns its living rather than performing for visitors. That gives it an honest, unpolished energy: seafood here is about as fresh and cheap as Spain gets, especially around the tapas bars of Casco Vello, and the Rías Baixas estuary setting is genuinely striking, with beaches and the Cíes Islands a short ferry ride away.
Be honest: the city itself is short on conventional sights, heavy on traffic and hills, and much of the waterfront is industrial rather than scenic, so it works better as a base for exploring Galicia's coast than as a standalone city break. Stay near Casco Vello or the harbour area, where the old town's bars and restaurants are within walking distance and the port views justify the climb.
