Staying in Yanqing
Yanqing is the mountainous district on Beijing's northern edge that hosted the skiing and sliding events for the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the venues at Xiaohaituo remain the main reason outsiders now know the name. It's also home to one of the most dramatic, least-crowded sections of the Great Wall at Badaling, plus the gentler Kangxi Grasslands for a taste of open country you won't find inside the city.
This is not central Beijing, and if you're not here for skiing, hiking or Wall-walking, there's little to fill a day once you've seen the sights. Public transport has improved with the high-speed rail link, but a car still makes exploring far easier. Choice is limited too, with only nine hotels listed here rather than the dozens you'll find in the capital proper. Stay near the Olympic zone if you're skiing or visiting the sliding centre, since everything else in Yanqing is spread thin across the district.
