Beijing is imperial China at full scale: the Forbidden City's courtyards run on for the better part of a kilometre, Tiananmen Square is vaster than photographs convey, and the Temple of Heaven's parks fill with dancers and card players at dawn. The Great Wall at Mutianyu makes a straightforward day trip and is far less mobbed than Badaling.
The city itself is huge and ring-road-shaped, so distances deceive — but the surviving hutong alleys of Dongcheng bring it back to human scale. Book the Forbidden City ahead; it sells out. Stay in Dongcheng, ideally near a hutong quarter around Gulou or Wangfujing, which puts the major sights, the metro and the best duck restaurants within easy reach.
