Hotels near St Mark's Basilica

Staying near St Mark's Basilica means staying in the most photographed, most crowded square footage in Venice, so the question isn't whether you'll be close to the sights but how much you want to pay for the privilege of stepping out of your hotel straight into the Piazza San Marco crowds. The other 12 are a little further out, which can mean a quieter base and a genuine break from the day-tripper crush once you head back in the evening, at the cost of a longer walk (or vaporetto hop) each time you want to see the basilica lit up at night or beat the morning queues.

Basing yourself right by the basilica also puts you within easy reach of the Doge's Palace, since the two share the same square, making it sensible to treat them as one combined visit rather than separate outings.

If you'd rather retreat to a calmer corner of the city after dark, the slightly more distant options still keep St Mark's an easy, walk
