Hotels near St. Peter's Basilica

The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, or simply St. Peter's Basilica, is a church of the Italian Renaissance located in Vatican City, an independent microstate enclaved within the city of Rome, Italy. It was initially planned in the 15th century by Pope Nicholas V and then Pope Julius II to replace the ageing Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was built in the fourth century by Roman emperor Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

422 hotels within 5 km of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City as the crow flies, including 293 properties rated 4 stars or higher. The closest we have measured is Hotel Emmaus, a 700 m walk away. The nearest major venue is Stadio Olimpico (3.5 km), as the crow flies.

Staying near St. Peter's Basilica means staying in the Prati or Borgo districts that ring the Vatican walls, since Vatican City itself has no hotels.

The trade-off is straightforward: the handful of closest hotels command a premium for that proximity and tend to book out fastest, particularly around Easter or major papal audiences, while options a bit further out offer more choice and often better value without sacrificing much beyond a longer stroll. Peter's Square versus having a wider pick of rooms and rates.

If your priority is early or late visits to the basilica and Pietà, or a pre-booked Necropolis tour with a tight arrival window, base yourself in that inner ring near Borgo Pio. If you're balancing the Vatican with wider Rome sightseeing, the slightly further Prati hotels are usually the more practical, better-value choice.
