Hotels near Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life

Riveted iron, soot-dark brick and the green line of an old canal set the tone at Summerlee, where the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life occupies the ground of a former ironworks in Coatbridge. This independent museum tells the industrial and social history of this corner of Scotland through heavy machinery, working vehicles and the everyday belongings of the people who made iron, mined coal and built engines here. Across the grounds stand reconstructed miners' cottages furnished to show home life through the years, a recreated coal mine and the tracks of a heritage tramway. The excavated remains of the ironworks lie beside a stretch of the Monkland Canal, so the landscape itself carries the story as much as any display case. Coatbridge grew on iron, and this site makes that plain. Stay in North Lanarkshire to make it part of your trip.
