History

Hull City were founded in 1904 and took the Tigers nickname from the black-and-amber stripes they have worn ever since. The club had already had several spells in the top flight when they were last relegated, in 2016-17, going down after a heavy final-day defeat at Crystal Palace. Their return arrived nine years later, via the 2025-26 Championship play-offs, when a goal from Oli McBurnie beat Middlesbrough in the final at Wembley and sent the Tigers back up for 2026-27 — the reward for a long rebuild through the lower leagues at the MKM Stadium.

Records & quirks

  • Hull became the first team eliminated from a major cup competition on penalties, losing to Manchester United in the 1970 Watney Cup.
  • In 1998, Hull fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch during a League Cup tie at Bolton, an early example of an in-match fan protest.
  • Hull's climb from the fourth tier to the Premier League between 2003 and 2008 is one of the fastest rises in English football history.
  • Hull's 6-0 win over Fulham in December 2013 remains the club's biggest-ever Premier League victory.
