History
The Caribbean Premier League was launched by Cricket West Indies in 2013, replacing the old Caribbean Twenty20 to give the region its own glamorous, floodlit franchise competition, and it has since become one of the liveliest events on the global T20 calendar — cricket wrapped in soca, steel pan and carnival colour.
Barbados have been part of it from the start, first as the Barbados Tridents, who lifted the trophy in 2014 and again in 2019 before rebranding as the Barbados Royals in 2021. Their home is the Kensington Oval, the grandest ground in the Caribbean, where cricket has been played since the 1880s and Test matches since 1930.
Rebuilt at a cost of around US$45 million for the 2007 World Cup, the Oval staged that tournament's final, the 2010 World Twenty20 final and the 2024 men's T20 World Cup final, and it hosts the CPL final once more in 2026 — reason enough to time a Barbados trip around the cricket.
