The largest Catholic pilgrimage on earth: each year around ten million people converge on the Basílica de Guadalupe in the north of Mexico City for the feast of the Virgin on 12 December. Pilgrims arrive on foot, by bicycle and on their knees; the night of the 11th brings Las Mañanitas sung to the Virgin at midnight, with concheros dancers and mariachi filling the vast plaza until dawn.

It is intense, devotional and completely unstaged — go respectfully, arrive the evening before, and expect the surrounding streets to move at walking pace.
