Agra exists, for almost every visitor, because of one building: the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan's white-marble mausoleum and one of the most photographed structures on earth, best seen at sunrise before the crowds and heat build. The city around it is a working Uttar Pradesh urban centre of around 1.4 million people, and it doesn't try particularly hard to be more than a Taj gateway — Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah's tomb are genuinely worth the extra half-day, but much of the rest is traffic, touts near the monuments, and pollution that can dull the marble's shine on bad days.

Be honest: most people come for one or two nights, see the Taj, and move on, and the city doesn't punish that approach.
