Arouca has gone from a sleepy corner of Aveiro district to a name on every Portuguese hiker's list, almost entirely because of one thing: the 516 Arouca bridge, currently marketed as the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, strung high over the Paiva gorge and paired with the Paiva Walkways boardwalk trail below. The wider Arouca Geopark, with its granite peaks around Serra da Freita and waterfalls like Frecha da Mizarela, gives genuine reason to stay more than a day rather than treat it as a day trip from Porto.

Be honest: this is a small, rural town built around one attraction, so nightlife, restaurant variety and polish are limited, and infrastructure gets stretched on summer weekends when the bridge and walkways draw crowds.
