Staying in Canacona
Canacona is Goa's southernmost taluka, and its small administrative town, also called Chaudi, is a working market town of shops, a bus stand and a Konkan Railway station rather than a holiday destination in itself. What draws people here are the beaches strung along the coast a short ride away: crescent-shaped Palolem, Goa's best-known southern bay, and quieter, longer Agonda to the north, both backed by palms and far calmer than the party beaches of North Goa.
Inland, the forested Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary offers a green break from the sand. Palolem gets crowded and commercial in peak winter season, and much of the beach-hut accommodation is seasonal, packing up during the June-to-September monsoon when the sea is rough and many places close. Staying in Chaudi itself makes sense mainly for rail connections and lower costs. Most visitors are better off basing themselves at Palolem for restaurants and buzz, or Agonda for space and quiet.
