Staying in Chinon
Chinon is a small town on the Vienne river in the Loire, dominated by the ruined royal fortress where Joan of Arc first met Charles VII in 1429. The old town below is genuinely medieval, all narrow lanes and tuffeau-stone houses, and it sits in the heart of Chinon appellation vineyards, so the local red wine is a real draw alongside the history. Outside the château and the wine, there isn't much to fill more than a day or two, and the town goes quiet at night once the day-trip coach crowds clear out.
It's a workable base for the Château de Montsoreau and its contemporary art museum a short drive along the river, which gives you a reason to stay longer than the castle alone justifies. With only ten hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book early in summer. Stay in the old town near the château for walkable access to the sights and river views, rather than out near the modern outskirts.
