Chippenham is a working Wiltshire market town on the River Avon, with a history that reaches back to the Saxons. It was a royal estate of King Alfred, whose forces were famously surprised here by the Danes in 878. Today it is better known as a practical base than a destination.

It sits just off the M4 and on Brunel's Great Western main line, so trains run straight to Bath, Bristol and London. The town centre is pleasant but modest, with a handful of old stone buildings, a riverside park and a fair amount of chain retail, and most evenings are quiet. The real draw is what surrounds it.
