Devizes is a solid Wiltshire market town built around a handsome square, a working brewery (Wadworth, whose dray horses still work the local pub deliveries) and the Kennet and Avon Canal, whose Caen Hill flight of 29 locks just outside town is one of the great feats of British canal engineering and worth the walk. Be honest: Devizes Castle is a nineteenth-century private house on the old castle site, not a ruin you can explore, so don't come expecting battlements.

The real draw is location: Avebury's stone circle and West Kennet Long Barrow are a short drive away, and Stonehenge is manageable too, making this a quieter, less touristy base than Salisbury for seeing both. Stay centrally near the market square, so you can walk to the canal towpath and reach Avebury without relying on Devizes' patchy bus service.
