Duisburg sits where the Ruhr meets the Rhine and runs the largest inland port in the world, a working harbour that still moves more freight than most seaside ports. Its old coalworks have been repurposed at Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, where rusting blast furnaces host Europe's largest indoor diving centre, floodlit night walks and climbing routes bolted to the old ore bunkers.
The Innenhafen, the old inner harbour, has swapped grain silos for museums, offices and waterside restaurants. This is Ruhr industrial heartland rather than a pretty German old town, so come for the scale of the port and the reclaimed industrial landscape, not half-timbered squares. Stay near the Innenhafen for restaurants and the walk out to the harbour front.
