Staying in Freising
Freising is one of Bavaria's oldest towns, a bishop's seat since the eighth century and still home to the Domberg, the cathedral hill whose Romanesque cathedral hides a lavish baroque interior by the Asam brothers. Across the valley sits Weihenstephan, which claims to be the world's oldest continuously operating brewery, alongside the Technical University of Munich's life-sciences campus, so the town has a steady student and academic presence rather than a museum-piece feel.
The compact old town below the Domberg is pleasant, walkable and noticeably calmer than Munich, about forty minutes south by train. Be honest: most visitors are here because Munich Airport is minutes away, and evenings are quiet, with nightlife amounting to beer gardens and a handful of pubs. Some parts of town also sit under the flight paths, so aircraft noise is a real consideration. Stay in the old town around Marienplatz, within walking distance of the cathedral and brewery, with easy S-Bahn connections to both the airport and central Munich.
