Gavarnie-Gèdre is a scatter of stone villages at the head of a Pyrenean valley, best known for the Cirque de Gavarnie, a vast glacial amphitheatre of 1,500-metre walls within a UNESCO World Heritage site, with one of Europe's highest waterfalls pouring down its face.
The villages themselves are tiny, geared to walkers in summer and a small ski area in winter. A Tour de France summit finish here is a rare event that swallows every bed for miles. Stay in Gavarnie or Gèdre if you can get in; otherwise Luz-Saint-Sauveur, down the valley, has far more rooms and a proper town around them.
