Hotels in Gyeongju

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for close to a thousand years, and it shows: this is Korea's open-air history museum, with royal burial mounds rising straight out of city parkland, Bulguksa temple and the Seokguram grotto up on Tohamsan mountain, and the Bomun Lake resort strip built for coach-tour turnover. It's compact and walkable in the historic core, which suits a slower few days rather than a nightlife trip, and the population is small enough that the town can feel sleepy outside the Cheomseongdae-and-tumuli circuit.

Much of the modern city is fairly nondescript sprawl, and the interesting parts are concentrated in a few clearly defined pockets rather than spread evenly across town. Stay near Bomun Lake if you want resort comforts and easy parking, or base yourself close to the Daereungwon tomb complex for walking distance to the main sights.
