Staying in Busan

Busan is South Korea's second city and its main port, built around a dramatic run of headlands, beaches and mountains that Seoul simply doesn't have. It's known for Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches, the Jagalchi fish market, the hillside houses of Gamcheon Culture Village, and a laid-back, salty character that Koreans themselves consider a welcome contrast to the capital's intensity. The Busan International Film Festival each October brings a genuine buzz and fills rooms fast.

Outside beach season and festival dates, parts of the city can feel workaday and industrial, and the sprawl means Haeundae, Nampo-dong and the airport area are each their own world with real travel time between them. Gimhae International Airport sits west of the centre, a manageable taxi or light-rail ride in. Stay in Haeundae for beach access and nightlife, or Nampo-dong for markets, ferries and old-town Busan on foot.
