Staying in Kobarid
Kobarid sits in the Soča Valley in Slovenia's northwest, a small town whose name is inseparable from the Isonzo Front: this is where Ernest Hemingway served as an ambulance driver, and the events he later fictionalised in A Farewell to Arms unfolded in the mountains around it. The Kobarid Museum, covering the First World War battles fought here, is genuinely excellent and draws history travellers on its own merits.
Beyond the war history, the town is now a base for the Soča River itself, prized for kayaking and some of the clearest turquoise water in Europe, plus waterfalls and gorges within easy reach. Be honest: Kobarid is tiny, with a population barely over a thousand, so nightlife and dining choice are limited and everything shuts down early outside peak season. Stay in Kobarid itself rather than commuting from Bovec or Tolmin if the museum and Soča Front sites are your priority, since it puts you within walking distance of both.
