Staying in Ljubljana
Ljubljana is built around its castle-topped hill and the Ljubljanica river below, where architect Joze Plecnik reshaped the historic core in the early twentieth century: his Triple Bridge, three linked crossings into the old town, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021. A few minutes downstream, the 1901 Dragon Bridge carries four green dragon statues that gave the Slovenian capital its unofficial mascot.
Riverside terraces fill with cafe tables in the warmer months, and the hilltop castle, reached by funicular, gives the best view over the red roofs below. Be honest: it is a small capital and can feel very quiet once the day-trip crowds clear out in the evening. Stay in the old town near the river to walk to the castle, bridges and cafes.
