Kuta on Lombok is a laid-back surf and beach town on Indonesia's southern coast — and, to be clear, it is not the famous Kuta on neighbouring Bali; this is a quieter, wilder place entirely. It anchors the Mandalika resort zone, home to the Mandalika street circuit that hosts Indonesia's round of the MotoGP world championship, a 4.3 km ribbon of 17 turns wrapped around the coast.

The real draw is the coastline: white-sand crescents like Tanjung Aan, the sweeping beginner-friendly bay of Selong Belanak and the heavier reef breaks at Mawi are all a short drive away. It is still developing: sights are spread out, public transport is thin and you will want a scooter or driver to get around. Stay in Kuta town itself for the cafes, surf schools and easy beach access.
