Maia is a municipality just north of Porto, best known as the location of Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport rather than for any sight-seeing appeal of its own. It's a working town of light industry and business parks, with a modern civic centre but little of the tiled, riverside charm that draws people to Porto itself. Be honest: you won't find anything here resembling Porto Cathedral or the gilded interior of São Francisco, and there's no reason to base yourself in Maia if sightseeing is the point of the trip.

What it does offer is proximity to the airport and easy road and metro links into central Porto, making it a practical option for early flights, business travel, or overspill when the city centre is booked out.
