Staying in Maspalomas
Maspalomas is Gran Canaria's big southern resort, built around one genuinely remarkable feature: the Maspalomas dunes, a stretch of Sahara-like sand backing onto the beach that's protected as a nature reserve and worth the walk regardless of where you're staying. It's also the island's main gay-friendly destination, centred on Yumbo Centrum, and a long-running package-holiday hub with big all-inclusive hotels, English breakfasts and German supermarkets rather than authentic Canarian dining.
Be honest: much of the architecture is dated concrete-block resort development from the seventies and eighties, and the town itself has little historic character beyond the dunes and the lighthouse. What it does deliver reliably is near-guaranteed sun, warm water year-round, and easy access from Gran Canaria Airport, a short drive north. Stay close to the dunes and Playa del Inglés seafront if you want beach access and nightlife within walking distance, since the town sprawls and taxis add up otherwise.
