Hotels in Recklinghausen

Recklinghausen sits on the northern edge of the Ruhr, a former coal-mining town that's traded pit shafts for a reputation as gateway to the Ruhrgebiet's industrial-heritage trail. It's best known for the Ruhrfestspiele, a long-running theatre festival held every summer, and for the Ikonen-Museum, which holds one of Germany's largest collections of Russian and Greek icons outside Russia itself.

Be honest: the town centre is modest and functional rather than beautiful, rebuilt after the war with the kind of architecture that won't hold your attention long, and most visitors are here for the festival, business in the wider Ruhr region, or as a cheaper, quieter base than Essen or Dortmund. Stay near the Altstadt if you want walkable access to the festival venues and restaurants; anywhere further out means relying on the regional trains that link Recklinghausen to the rest of the Ruhr.
