Hotels in Salerno

Salerno spends most of its tourist life as the practical alternative to Amalfi Coast prices: a real working city with its own port and university, not a resort town, which means you get proper trattorias and normal Italian street life instead of postcard prettiness. The medieval centro storico is genuinely worth the visit, with a Romanesque cathedral built to hold relics of Saint Matthew, and the seafront promenade (Lungomare Trieste) is one of the more pleasant evening walks on this coast.

The outskirts and train station area are unglamorous, and Salerno's own beaches don't compete with Positano or Amalfi, so most visitors use it as a base rather than a destination in itself. Trains and Amalfi Coast buses run from here, which is the real selling point. Stay near the historic centre or the seafront rather than around the station, since that's where the walkable restaurants, the cathedral, and the connections to Amalfi, Ravello and Paestum all converge.
