Staying in Sliema

Sliema is Malta's main seafront town for visitors who want amenities over history, a dense strip of apartment blocks, shopping and promenade dining facing Valletta across the harbour. It has no real beach to speak of, just rocky sunbathing shelves and lidos along the coast, but the views back to Valletta's fortifications, especially at night, are among the best on the island.

It's a proper town rather than a resort, with supermarkets, buses and a permanent population of around 11,000, which makes it practical for longer stays and easier for families or business travellers than the more tourist-built areas nearby. The architecture is mostly unremarkable modern concrete, and traffic along the front can be heavy in peak season. It's a short taxi or ferry ride from Valletta and a manageable drive from Malta International Airport.
