Staying in Termonfeckin
Termonfeckin is a small coastal village in County Louth, a few miles north-east of Drogheda, and yes, the name gets a laugh from anyone who knows Irish slang. It actually comes from an early Christian monastery founded by St Féichín, and the churchyard still holds an old carved high cross, with a compact medieval tower house, Termonfeckin Castle, standing nearby. What draws most visitors now is golf and sea air. Seapoint links sits right on the edge of the village, and the County Louth course at Baltray is just down the coast, with a long, open strand for walking.
It also makes a quieter base for the Boyne Valley, including Newgrange, than staying in Drogheda itself. With a population of under fifteen hundred and only a handful of places to stay, this is somewhere to sleep, eat and walk rather than a destination for nightlife or shopping, and you will want a car. Stay in or near the village close to the strand and Seapoint for the easiest access to the beach and golf.
