Hotels in Slane

Slane is a small Georgian village on the River Boyne in County Meath, laid out around a crossroads framed by four near-identical stone houses, and it punches far above its size. Slane Castle, still home to the Conyngham family, has hosted huge open-air rock concerts in its natural amphitheatre since the early eighties, with U2, the Rolling Stones, Queen and Oasis all having played there, and its grounds now include a whiskey distillery.

Above the village, the Hill of Slane is where Saint Patrick is said to have lit his paschal fire in defiance of the High King at Tara. Outside concert weekends Slane is very quiet, with a handful of pubs and limited dining, and the main road through the village carries heavy traffic. Stay close to the village crossroads so you can walk to the castle, pubs and riverside while being well placed for Newgrange.
