Thonon-les-Bains is a spa town on the French shore of Lake Geneva, split between an upper town of squares and cafés and the little port of Rives on the water below, the two linked by a short funicular. It is quieter and less international than Évian, its famous neighbour along the shore, with a working fishing harbour and a château museum.
The lakeside setting makes it a natural Tour de France stage town and a good base for the Chablais mountains behind. Stay in the upper town centre for restaurants, or near Rives for the waterfront; seasonal boats cross the lake to Lausanne in Switzerland.
