Staying in Valletta
Valletta is Malta's capital, a fortified peninsula city built by the Knights of St John in the sixteenth century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site almost in its entirety. It's compact and dense with limestone baroque churches, Grand Master's Palace, and the auberges of the various knightly langues, all packed into streets you can walk end to end in twenty minutes. With a population of under 7,000, this is a city that empties out fast once day-trippers and cruise passengers leave, and its steep stepped streets and lack of proper car access mean logistics can be a hassle if you're carrying luggage or averse to hills.
It's a short taxi ride from Malta International Airport (MLA), which makes arrival easy even if the city itself demands patience on foot. Stay inside the old city walls for the atmosphere and views over the Grand Harbour, rather than in the newer Floriana approach roads nearby.
