Hotels in Venlo

Venlo is a Dutch border town on the Maas in northern Limburg, a few kilometres from Germany, and it behaves like one: German day-trippers fill its shopping streets and markets, and the local dialect and carnival culture feel closer to the Rhineland than to Amsterdam. Carnival (Vastelaovend) is the big event of the year, when the compact old centre around the Markt and its Renaissance town hall turns loud and costumed for days. Outside that, the draws are modest but real: riverside walks, the Limburgs Museum, and the modern-art Museum van Bommel van Dam.

Be honest: much of Venlo's economy runs on logistics and distribution, so the outskirts are warehouses and ring roads, and many visitors pass through for work rather than leisure. Families sometimes base themselves here for Irrland, the big farm-themed play park just across the German border. Stay in the walkable centre between the station and the Markt, where restaurants, the river and the train are all within a few minutes on foot.
