Hotels in Wells

Wells is England's smallest city, a market town of around 11,000 people that holds city status because of its cathedral, and the cathedral earns it. The west front is crowded with medieval statuary, and inside, the great scissor arches are one of the most striking sights in English Gothic.

Next door, the moated Bishop's Palace and the medieval houses of Vicar's Close make the whole precinct feel remarkably intact, which is partly why film fans know it as the setting of Hot Fuzz. Once the day-trippers leave, Wells is very quiet, evenings are low-key, there is no railway station, and with only a handful of hotels, rooms go quickly in summer and on market days.
