Hotels in Witten

Witten sits in the Ruhr valley between Bochum and Dortmund, a mid-sized town that grew up on coal and steel and now gets by as a quiet residential base rather than a destination in its own right. Its Ruhr University Witten/Herdecke, Germany's first private university, and a handful of half-timbered buildings around the old town give it some character, but there's no single sight that justifies a special trip.

Be honest: most visitors end up here for business, family visits, or as a cheaper, calmer alternative to staying in Bochum or Dortmund proper, both a short train ride away. The Ruhr riverside paths and the Muttental valley, with its old mining trail, are worth an afternoon if you're already in town. Stay near the Hauptbahnhof for easy rail connections into the wider Ruhr area.
