Hotels in Zwickau

Zwickau sits in Saxony's coal country, and its real claim to fame is cars: this is where Trabant and Horch (later Audi) built their reputations, and the August Horch Museum, housed in a former factory, is the town's best reason for a detour. The old town has a genuinely handsome late-Gothic core, centred on St Mary's Cathedral and a market square that survived the GDR-era industrial sprawl surrounding it, and Robert Schumann was born here, which the local museum makes the most of.

Outside the historic centre and the car museum, Zwickau is a modest post-industrial city with limited nightlife and a rail-junction feel rather than a destination in its own right. It works well as a stopover between Leipzig and the Czech border, or a day-trip base for the Ore Mountains.
