History
The AIG Women's Open is the oldest of women's golf's major championships and the only one played on links land. It was first staged in 1976, when Jenny Lee Smith won the inaugural title and the total prize fund was just £500; the championship has since grown beyond recognition, gaining major status and, from 2019, the backing of insurer AIG under the stewardship of The R&A.
The 2026 edition marks a landmark 50th staging and returns to Royal Lytham & St Annes on the Lancashire coast, a classic championship links among the dunes of the Fylde that has hosted the men's Open many times and welcomes the women's major for a sixth occasion. Lytham has produced memorable champions, from Annika Sorenstam in 2003 to home favourite Georgia Hall in 2018.
For the golden-anniversary year the prize fund rises to a record 10 million US dollars, with 1.5 million going to the winner, reflecting a purse that has more than trebled since 2019.
