History

The British Masters is one of the longest-running tournaments in British golf, first played in 1946 and long regarded as the English game's flagship event on the European, now DP World, Tour. The Belfry, near Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, is among the most famous venues in the sport: its Brabazon course has staged the Ryder Cup a record four times, in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002, more than any other venue.

The course is defined by two of golf's most celebrated closing holes — the drivable par-four 10th, which tempts players to go for the green across water, and the daunting par-four 18th, with its lake guarding the front of the green and grandstands rising all around. It was here in 1985 that Europe ended a long wait to reclaim the Ryder Cup on home soil.
