About BMW PGA Championship 2026

The European tour's flagship event brings the game's biggest names together for four days of matchplay on a course that regularly ranks among the finest in Europe. Corporate hospitality sits alongside general admission, so expect a mix of golf purists and casual spectators enjoying the September weather. Late summer light and cooler mornings make for pleasant viewing conditions across the closing holes.

Where to stay nearby

Woking sits closest to the club and offers a handful of hotels, useful if you want to minimise travel time on tournament days. Windsor, the same distance out, has a much larger choice of accommodation and the added appeal of its own castle and riverside for downtime between rounds. London, roughly 35km away, gives you by far the widest range of hotels and easy road or rail access into Surrey, though journey times on event days should be built in with some care given the extra distance.

History

The BMW PGA Championship is the flagship event of the DP World Tour and one of its prestigious Rolex Series, and its home — the West Course at Wentworth in Surrey — is among the most storied parkland layouts in Britain. Designed by the celebrated architect Harry Colt and opened in 1926, the course earned the nickname the Burma Road for its demanding length and tree-lined difficulty, and was reshaped in recent years under the eye of former champion Ernie Els.

The PGA Championship dates back to 1955 and has been staged at Wentworth almost every year since 1984, its roll of honour reading like a who's who of European golf, from Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo to Rory McIlroy. Set amid the pines and mansions of Virginia Water on London's south-western fringe, it draws the strongest home field of the season and pairs top-class golf with a festival atmosphere of music and entertainment. The closing par-five eighteenth, reachable in two, has settled many a dramatic finish.
