The most famous Christmas market in the world opens with the Christkind reciting the prologue from the balcony of the Frauenkirche, a ritual that has run since the 1940s in a market documented as far back as the 1620s. Rules keep it deliberately old-fashioned: no plastic garlands, no piped music, and a jury vets the stalls.

What you get is rows of red-and-white cloth roofs across the Hauptmarkt selling Nuremberg Rostbratwurst three-to-a-roll, Lebkuchen from bakeries that have made it for centuries, and the little prune-figure Zwetschgenmännle found nowhere else. The old town is compact and walled, so the market, the castle and the craftsmens courtyard are all within a few minutes on foot.
