Wooden huts ring the square beneath the astronomical clock and the twin Gothic towers of the Tyn church, with an enormous tree lit on opening night in front of them. The food is the draw as much as the crafts: trdelnik turning over coals, smoked ham carved off the bone, hot honey wine and svarak. A second, quieter market runs up Wenceslas Square, and smaller neighbourhood ones sit outside the tourist circuit if you want elbow room.

Because Prague runs well past New Year while most German markets close on Christmas Eve, it is the obvious choice for a trip in the strange quiet week between the two.
