Staying in Anglet
Anglet is the surf town that sits in the shadow of its two famous neighbours, wedged between Biarritz and Bayonne on the Basque coast and often treated as a mere suburb of both. That undersells it: its long, unbroken run of Atlantic beaches, from La Barre at the mouth of the Adour down through Les Cavaliers, Sables d'Or and Chambre d'Amour, draws serious surfers and is far less glossy than Biarritz's seafront. Behind the dunes, the Chiberta pine forest and its golf course give the town a greener, more relaxed feel than you might expect.
Be honest: much of Anglet is residential sprawl and roundabouts with no real historic centre, the Atlantic swell and currents make some beaches risky for casual swimmers, and the weather here is wetter than the Mediterranean. Its position next to the Biarritz airport and between two livelier towns makes it a practical, often cheaper base. Stay around Chambre d'Amour and Sables d'Or for the beachfront promenade, surf schools and an easy coastal walk into Biarritz.
