Staying in Ano Mera
Áno Merá is the other Mykonos: the island's second settlement and its only real inland village, a farming community of whitewashed houses a short drive from the cruise crowds and beach clubs of Mykonos Town. Its heart is a broad central square lined with tavernas, overlooked by the sixteenth-century Panagia Tourliani monastery, where locals still outnumber visitors on most evenings. It makes a sensible base for families, couples and anyone who wants the island's beaches without its nightlife, with windswept Ftelia and the sheltered sands around Kalafatis and Elia within easy reach.
Be honest: there is no beach in the village itself, nightlife is close to nonexistent, and you will want a car or scooter, because buses are thinner than from the town and the best coves are spread across the island. Day trips to the ancient island of Delos run from the Mykonos Town harbour. Stay near the main square for walkable tavernas and the bus stop, or on the village edges toward Kalafatis if beach access matters more.
