Staying in Chaniá
Chania was Crete's capital under Venetian rule, and its old harbour still shows why: fortified walls, the Firkas fortress, and a slender lighthouse at the end of the mole that has guided ships in since the sixteen-hundreds. The backstreets behind the waterfront mix Venetian townhouses with Ottoman minarets and a domed covered market built in 1913, all rebuilt more than once after earthquakes and war.
Cretan cooking here leans on wild greens, snails and graviera cheese rather than typical taverna fare, so seek out the family tavernas a street back from the harbour. The nearest proper beaches are a short bus ride away, not a walk, and the old town gets uncomfortably crowded and hot from June to August. Stay near the Venetian harbour for the fortress views and the old town's best restaurants.
