Staying in Athens
Athens is a sprawling, traffic-heavy modern city with the ancient world sitting on a rock in the middle of it. The Acropolis at opening time is worth the early alarm, the Acropolis Museum beneath it is superb, and the Agora lets you walk where the classical city actually did business. Beyond the ruins, the city has real energy: rooftop bars facing the Parthenon, the Varvakios market, street art through Psyrri.
It is not pretty in the polished European sense — concrete dominates and summer heat radiates off it — but it's cheaper and more alive than its reputation suggests. Stay in Plaka or Monastiraki to walk to the sites, or Koukaki, just south of the Acropolis, for a quieter neighbourhood feel at gentler prices.
