Beaumont-du-Périgord is a thirteenth-century bastide town built by the English during the Hundred Years' War, and it still shows: a grid-plan layout, a fortified Gothic church designed to double as a keep, and stone arcades around the central square. It sits in the Périgord Pourpre, the wine-and-walnut country south of the Dordogne valley, and makes a reasonable base for exploring nearby bastide villages and the river towns without the crowds or prices of Sarlat.
Be honest: with a population under 1,300 there isn't much nightlife or dining choice, and this is a place for market mornings and quiet evenings rather than entertainment. It's also a fair drive from any train station, so you'll want a car. We list eight hotels here, which is a decent spread for a town this size. Stay right in the old bastide centre near the square, so you can walk to the market and the church and use the car only for day trips.
