Staying in Cascais
Cascais made its name as the Portuguese royal family's summer retreat, and it still carries itself like a resort town rather than a working fishing port, even though fishing boats still land catches at the harbour. The old town's cobbled squares, citadel and beaches such as Praia da Rainha sit close together and are genuinely pleasant to walk, while the coast road out to Boca do Inferno gives a proper Atlantic blast of cliffs and spray.
Be honest: it's expensive by Portuguese standards, trades heavily on day-trippers from Lisbon, and in high summer the beaches and seafront restaurants get uncomfortably packed for what is a small town of around 36,000 people. It's also more sedate than lively — this is not the place for nightlife. Stay close to the marina or old town centre, since Cascais is compact enough that walking distance to the sea and restaurants matters more than which specific street you're on.
