Hotels in Drogheda

Drogheda is one of Ireland's oldest towns, a Viking and Norman port straddling the River Boyne that still wears its history openly: the twin-towered St Laurence's Gate survives from the medieval walls, Millmount's fort looks down over the river, and St Peter's Church famously displays the preserved head of St Oliver Plunkett. Its darkest chapter, Cromwell's brutal siege of 1649, is part of the local story told at Millmount Museum.

The real draw for many visitors is location. The town itself is more working commuter hub than polished heritage destination, with heavy traffic, a somewhat tired centre and plenty of people who sleep here but work in Dublin, under an hour south on the M1. Stay in the town centre around West Street and St Laurence's Gate so you can walk to the sights and pubs and still reach Newgrange easily.
