Hotels in Ercolano

Ercolano is a scrappy, unglamorous Naples suburb that happens to sit on top of one of the best-preserved Roman towns in existence: Herculaneum, buried by the same seventy-nine AD eruption that destroyed Pompeii but smaller, less crowded, and arguably better preserved since it was sealed under volcanic mud rather than ash. Most visitors treat it as a half-day stop rather than a base, and the modern town itself offers little beyond traffic, apartment blocks and the excavation gates.

This is not a place to linger for its own sake, and the beaches nearby are poor compared to the Amalfi coast. Its real value is location — Vesuvius National Park is a direct bus ride up the hill, Pompeii is a short train away, and Naples airport isn't far either. Stay near the Herculaneum entrance or the Circumvesuviana station if you want easy access to the ruins and onward trains without needing a car.
